1996 Camry 4cyl

Me and my friend was riding around in his '96 Camry 4cyl and we smelled something awful. of course we didnt think it was anything until when he upshifted (its a 5spd manual) a few times and when he depressed the clutch it stayed at say 2500 RPM instead of going down to around 700 when he got off the clutch, it went up without him getting on the gas pedal then it dropped about 500 RPM. I thought it was his pressure plate on the clutch but he is gonna get it checked out to be safe. thoughts?

im a little confused about what happen...how fast where you going...what gear...if its doing this in all the gears...then your clutch mit be a fault...
