What is the procedure for checking the ignition coil on a 1987 Camry 4 cyl. ?

I'd first make sure there is voltage from the wires. You can remove a spark plug and ground it on the engine and see if you're getting a big blue spark. Make sure you disconnect the other plugs so it won't start on 3. I have a tester that tells me how many volts are running through the wires and that will tell me what the output of the coil is. Of course you need to know the wires are OK first. If you're not getting a spark you need to make sure your primary on the coil is getting 12 volts. I've not looked at one so I don't know where it would be as it's buried in the distributor. If primary voltage is there and no spark on output I'd say bad coil, bad, bad coil.
