My daughter's 92 Camry's (4 cyl, auto) auto transmission just failed at 234,000 kms (145,000 miles). I'm told only used transmissions from a 92 & 93 will work. I've located a 95 parts Camry with a 4 cyl & automatic.

Does anyone know what's involved in using the 95 tranny in a 92.

The Generation 3 Camry ran from 1992-1996.  2.0L and 2.2L 4 cylinder engines were used in the 1992 and then only the 2.2L in the 1995.  All used the A140E transmission.

Both trans used for the 2.2L use the same internal parts, axles, flex plate but somehow the engine starter appears differant.  Might be just an upgrade.

Should be OK IF both engines are the 2.2L and the trans is a A140E (not a A140L or A140H).  Not sure about the 2.0L which also used this trans but some of the parts seem differant.

You can tell the engine type by looking at the intake manifold, if 2.2L should read 2200.  If the smaller engine may display 2000 but not sure.  The trans number A140E should be printed on a sticker, edge of drivers door along with other numbers.

If going this route might grab the starter (and bolts), flex plate ( and crank bolts), then clip off any going wires to the trans before the plug just in case the plugs are differant between trans.

Not 100% sure but it looks OK, perhaps other members can post in.

What reason were you given for using only the 92/93?

Our car has the 2.2 engine. I was told by the repair shop that 92-93 were compatable and 94 & up were different, different electronics.

I can check the wiring diagrams for both years and see what the differance is.

I did some more checking and the 4 cyl auto trans for 92 - 93 is shaped differently to the one for 94 & up. They aren't interchangable.
