I'm thinking about buying an 87 camry wagon. It has the 6 cylinder engine with about 220,000 miles on it. My main question is how reliable are these cars in general? Is the 6 any less reliable than the 4? I've had goot luck with toyota's but they've all been 4 bangers. He wants 500 for the car. Just thought I'd see what you other camry owners think.

Camrys are about as reliable as the people who service them. At $500 there's not a lot of risk for you, especially if you are going to be doing the repairs yourself. I guess I need to ask, what are your expectations?

for $500 and it runs, its worth it.. but is it going to be your daliy driver? or project car?

It's going to be my daily driver putting about 30 mi per day. All the toyota's I've had before have lasted me close to 300,000 miles. I'll be able to do most repairs myself. Just wondering if the 6 cylinder engine has any flaws that would keep it from making it that high into the miles.

ohh i see. driving a i4 to a v6 you'll feel teh difference. and like pedro said, it all comes down to if the owner ever took care of it or not. but good luck with your decision.

Thanks for the info guys. Gonna go get it tonight. I'm not really too worried about the miles on it whereas if I were buying something like a ford escort I wouldn't even think about it if it was getting near the 100,000 mile mark.
