Default How-To: Replace the Fuel Filter on a '04 Camry

Hi guys and gals!

First post! Yay! Just wanted to express how excited I am to finally join an awesome community of Camry owners such as this one. I hope to interact with all of you at some point or another

Without further ado, my grandfather recently fouled the fuel injectors on his '04 Camry because his fuel filter had been dirtier than Bob Sagat's stand-up routine for quite some time now. So being the good grandson that I am I changed the fuel filter on his beloved ride this past weekend. The job turned out to be relatively painless- if a little messy- so your average shade tree mechanic with a basic tool kit should be able to sufficiently accomplish the job with relative ease.

I apologize for the lack of pictures but I'm at work right now so my time is rather sparse Here's a very elemental run-down on how one would change the fuel filter on a '04 Camry:

**TOOLS AND PARTS NEEDED**
Line wrench set
Ratchet, ¼-inch drive
Socket set, ¼-inch drive (Sears sells a high-quality set for a cheap price)
New Fuel Filter (Your Toyota dealer charges about $40 for a replacement filter but if you'd rather not put the dealership staff's offspring through college then you can buy the same OEM filter from toyotapartszone.com for $27 )

**PROCEDURE**

1) Loosen the lower flare nut on the bottom side of the fuel filter slowly, to relieve the fuel pressure. Hold the filter square nut with one wrench and remove the fuel line from the filter with another wrench.

2) Remove the upper banjo bolt, using a line wrench. When removing the banjo bolt, remove the upper and lower copper bushings. Remove the filter bracket, using the appropriate socket. Remove the fuel filter.

3) Install the new fuel filter into the filter bracket and tighten the bracket with the appropriate socket. Install the lower flare nut fuel line and tighten securely.

4) Install two new copper gaskets on both sides of the banjo bolt. Insert the bolt and tighten securely.

Keep in mind that this is a very elemental write-up and as a result may be missing some subtle intricities of the job. Feel free to add some supplemental info guys!
