2000 camry acceleration problem
Hello, I am new to this forum and to Toyotas. I have inherited a 2000 Camry from my mom, engine replaced last year with a model from Japan, along with the radiator & water pump. It has been slowly going downhill since I have had it for the past 5 months. First it started with a rough idle at stops, then it started jerking when driving (not often though). It died out only once, when I was going into work, luckily I was already in the parking lot, but started right up and I parked. I took it to my cousin, who put the engine in, and he said that the code was showing was to replace the cam sensor, so we did that and it did not help. That was a few weeks ago. Now, whenever I am at a stop, it jerks like someone is rocking the car. When I accelerate, it has a hard time going into gear, then when it finally does catch, it jerks a little until I hit about 45-50 mph. After I am on the highway, going past 55, it runs smoothly, but will occasionally jerk a few times when I accelerate. It just concerns me that in low speeds it jerks a lot, and runs really rough at idle, so rough that I have to put it in neutral to stop it from jerking, even then it will still. When in neutral, the idle jumps between 8000-12000 rpms. The new engine has about 7-8000 miles on it. As far as I know it has not had an oil change, or a tune up with the new engine. Someone suggested that may be the problem, and now we're looking into that. I also have put seafoam in the gas today and drove around 60 miles, but the problem is still there. Any help?

RE: 2000 camry acceleration problem
Before installing did you check determine if the timing belt was installed correctlly.
The cam sensor uses pick up a signal from a tooth on the cam pulley. On rare occation this tooth can be damaged. Did you also check the wiring for the sensor.
The IAC valve can cause rough idle. The MAP sensor can cause both idle and hesitation issues.
Does the engine stall when you press on the gas or let off?

RE: 2000 camry acceleration problem
unfortuantly,I dont exactly know what he did, I wansnt there and had todrop it off to go to work, but when I told him the problem, he immediately said it may be a bad sensor, so he probably didn't check those things. It has not stalled, except for that one time, but it sure does feel like it wants to stall when at idle. the one time it did stallIthinkI had let off thegas.

I'm understanding that you don't have the knowledge or tools to trace this problem yourself. From what you've written I'd find a different mechanic. It does not appear that your cousin is doing you any favors.

Hello! I have a 94 camry v6 1mzfe that is doing the same thing. I took it to a shop to get diagnosed and they found two codes, crank sensor and ignitor sensor. I changed the crank sensor and the problem is still there. The engine does cut out when I press the accelerator down and I have to back off of it to keep the engine from completely dying. Did you have any success fixing this issue on your camry? Please help!

This is what they typed on my invoice:
"Car has the following codes in system p0300, p0301 p0305 misfire codes. p0203 injector circuit problem cylnder 3
p0753 shift solenoid bank 1 circuit fault
p0758 shift solenoid bank 2 circuit fault
p0773 shift solenoid e circuit fault and p1300 igniter bank 1 circuit problem.
After clearing codes the p1300 igniter bank 1 circuit code returns. Car has eratic spark signal. recommend starting with replacement of the crank sensor and the igniter first then recheck system."
