what is the correct procedure for checking fluid level. running in park, or nuetral. i could not find any info in car manual.

 

Trans fluid hot! On level ground, parking brake on, engine on, move selector from Park to 1st and back. Check fluid in Park, engine on.

The proceedure is for trans having dipsticks much like the engine.

Look in the engine compartment for a steel tube coming out of the trans and running up the front.

Newer cars may not have a dipstick. The trans uses a fill port much like manual trans, diffs, rear axles, etc.

 

Your best bet is to just do your normal driving or errand running....this will ensure that all the transmission fluid is hot, transmission fluid expands as it gets hotter so the hotter the better in my opinion. On your way back home stop at a gas station leave the car running and make sure its in park, Give it about 10 seconds then check it. If its not on the hot range it needs fluid, fluid specs can usually be found on the dipstick of the tranny. As stated before there may or may not be a transmission dipstick to check it with. If thats the case your best bet would take it to a shop whom you trust to check for you. Unless your mechanically inclined and dont mind getting a little dirty or sweaty.

07+ V6's do not have dipsticks, trannys are considered "sealed for life, with a lifetime fill of ATF-WS."
odd however, since the I4's have dipsticks and use the same fluid.

tannny is much like a manual transmission in terms of checking the fluid level, through the "fill" port and the "drain" port is close to the bottom of the tranny.

i personally will be doing drain and fills at about every 30k.
