Default Help with code Code 14 Igniter signal to ecu missing

Hi I have a 95 4cyl manual trans camry. I pulled this code off the check engine light.
Any idea how I can troubleshoot it?
Thanks

California or federal emissions?

Does the ign system have spark for the plugs.

Its federal emissions. How do I check for spark? Can I just pull the boot off a spark plug
and stick another one in there or do I pull the wire off the distributor?
Do I need to hold it close to metal ground?
Initial problem is car will start and I can drive it no problem but when I shut it off and
try and start it 5 - 10 minutes later it wont start. But if I wait an 1 hour it will start again without a problem. I mention this since I guess I should be checking for spark when its in the not starting condition - correct? Also that would mean someone would have to start the car while I hold the spark plug or boot end off distributor?
Thanks for the help

Yes, you can pull a boot off and stick a spark plug in (any plug that fits into the boot socket is OK). You need to touch the metal part of the plug with the threads to a metal ground point and watch for spark between the spark plug electrode and its ground (the hook shaped part) as the engine is cranked over.

Do this when the engine will not start!

Best to hold the boot with something insulated to prevent possible shock. Should be OK but never know.

Have someone work the ign key. If the engine starts when doing this test, turn ign key off.
