Question How to change the transmission fluid?

I have a 1998 Toyota Camry with the 4-cylinder engine.

How can I change the transmission and differential fluid?

Is there a drain plug?

There are two drain plugs. One for the trans oil pan and one for the differential. The differential has a second plug to add fluid its case. The trans fills by its dipstick.

In the trans, most of the fluid is in the torque converter. This fluid can't be drained out.

To get all of the trans fluid out. The best method is to let the trans fluid pump push it out into a container as shown the link above.

The internet may also have YouTube videos on how to do this.

Engage the emergency brake and keep the trans in Park when doing this work.

Refill the trans with fluid (estimate). Then repeat the above. Repeat the above until the fluid coming out is now clear.

When clear reconnect the cooler hose. Then refill the trans using the dip stick for accuracy.

To check the trans fluid. The car needs to be on a level surface. Start engine, move gear selector from P to L and back. Then leave running while checking. There are marks on the stick, HOT and COLD. The most accurate measurement is when the fluid is HOT.

Don't get carried away with adding fluid. When changing the fluid. If you know what comes out and you know what you put in. You should know reasonable well its level without looking at the dipstick.

When refill the trans the final time (after the fluid is clear). Add less fluid as you don't want to over fill the trans. Then using the dipstick work up the proper level. It only takes 6 oz of fluid to go from below the mark to above it. Then if above you will need to drain some out.

For the diff. The drain plug is under the diff housing. However loosen the filler plug FIRST located on the back of the diff housing. It has happened, owners have drained the diff to find the fill plug is frozen.

You will need a long, flexible nosed funnel to access the fill port and add fluid.

Add the same type of trans fluid used for the trans, to the diff until its starts to come out the side fill port. The proper level is the bottom of the side fill port hole (stops draining).
