Default rpm and transmission problems

I'm havin problems with my 94 camry v6. I just changed the trans for a used one. It worked good for a week or 2. Then my engine went. I replaced it for a used, tested 1mzfe engine. Now it won't read rpm on cluster and trans won't shift out of 1st. Every gear shifts and works except 1, 2, D all end up being 1st. Are these problems related? And what should I do to troubleshoot? Anyone that has knowledge in this, as it is a unique problem most techs don't have useful information. Please post any advice.

Are there any more gears other than 1.2.D? Can you manually shift to 2 and D? Does R work?

I would check VSS vehicle speed sensor. There is also probably a vacuum sensing valve as well to monitor engine load that tells the trans when to shift. Check for that too. I'm not a trans guy but just something for you to consider.

Park, Reverse, Neutral all work normal. Drive and the low gears all operate as 1st. The tachometer also does not read RPMs at all. The speedometer works properly. The vehicle will not go over 40 mph. Are these problems related and what would be the link. I contacted Toyota and they told me that it is probably a sensor or connection. Where are these sensors located?

I think you'll have to get the tach working first as that seems to be the problem. I'm not sure where the tach picks upits signal from, maybe the camshaft position sensor. Download the online manual and research where the tach gets its signal from and fix that first. You may find the trans works when that is fixed.

How could the tachometer affect the transmission though? I thought that was the speedometer. The tachometer sensor is located on the engine, I just can't locate the manuals yet.
