I just bought my second Camry, as my stepson totaled the first one out. I bought a fully loaded and very clean and well maintained 1999 with a V6 engine. It has 173000 miles, the previous owner made some entries in the service manuel, but I don't know when the timing belt was last changed. Is there some kind of service record at the dealer? The previous owner was a girl, and I assume not a DIY type, so my guess is dealer serviced. Should I just change it to be sure or can I check on this?

 

If a Toyota dealer changed it they "should" have noted any service on their computer system which have been told "should" be available at any dealer. A quick phone call should determine the validity of this statement.

Determine if there is a sticker on the timing belt cover, hood, drivers door, owners manual, etc noting a belt change or service date.

Otherwise yes change it. The recommended mileage by timing belt manufacturers is 90K, thus even with a timely change the car is again approaching a belt change.

 

I will replace the water pump, camshaft seals, crankshaft seals, idler, tensioner, timing belt, ps alt and AC belts next week. Thanks guys.

 

I'd use the service opportunity to also replace the PCV valve and valve cover gaskets. If the V6 (like the 4) has an oil pump o-ring and shaft seal I'd do that as well.

 

Unlike the 4 cyl getting to the valve cover on the back three cyl is a real pain. It involves removal of the intake manifold.... I have considered this and will not atempt just now. The curent gaskets are not leaking and I'll keep an eye on them.

 

Ok,It's done. We replaced the timing belt, idler pulley, tensioner pully, water pump, seals(cam and crank), and the outer belts(ac/alternator, and PS). Took me and my son about 5 hours. After the noise I was hearing from that area of the motor went away. It was a slight rattle. Now I can consider this Item closed for another 90K.
