Default Water Pump

Hi Guys,

Two more questions on this 1990 2.5L Camry I just purchased. 1.) How can I tell if the Timing belt is bad or should be replaced?? The previous owner is in a retirement home and doesn't remember?? 2.) I've got a slow coolant leak which drips from the edge of the oil pan. When I feel the top of the oil pan in that area, theres a collection of coolant. It seems to be coming down the side of the block behind the timing belt covers ...BUT I can't see it. I replaced the thermostat and I've checked that area and were the tube intersects the thermostat housing...and the hose connections while running and cooling down...no leaks.

If the belt is OK could it be the water pump??? can I replace just the Pump??

Thanks
Dan

Toyota states the belt can be inspected for cracks, damage, contamination from oil, coolant, etc.

However thought the water pump was turned by the timing belt. If your replacing the pump you need to remove the timing belt, thus best to just replace it.

Toyomoho is correct. If replacing the water pump then do the TB as well. With cars that have unknown service history you're better to assume nothing was done. I would recommend doing TB, WP, cam seals, crankshaft seal, oil pump o-ring and shaft seal, change all fluids.
