Fuel Tank Protector 2007 toyota camry xle
My fuel tank protector/shield (thin metal part between the tank and exhaust) was off/broken at two of its end and had been welded back for some time (more than a year). Few days ago it completely came apart on all the ends and I guess fell off. How important is it? Does it need to be replaced asap? Kindly advice.

Toyota would not have added the part without a reason as it adds to the manufacturing costs. The most likely reason is compliance with a law requiring shielding on exhaust systems if routed within xx inches of wiring, fuel tank, etc.
Will the car catch fire without the shield, doubt it. These shields fall off frequently with age and cars do not catch fire.
Suggest the next time the car is at shop for repairs have the mechanic install a replacement. If concerned at your convenience take the car to a muffler shop for repairs.
Would suggest not going to a Toyota dealer as their policy may be to not make repairs to the exhaust system but replace the pipe which will be very, very expensive.
Aftermarket generic heat shields can be purchased separately as again they do fall off.
Also some states require an in depth inspection of the car to renew license tabs, they might object to this issue. Each state varies, some states have no inspection process except for emissions testing.
