1989 Camry, front wheel bearing
I need to replace the left front wheel bearing on my '89 Camry. I know how to remove the wheel bearing carrier (AKA steering knuckle) and that I need a hydraulic press, but the new bearing had a design I've never seen before. The sealing rings were separate from the bearing. Is there anything special I should be aware of? The Haynes manual just said "leave this to a professional mechanic", which is my last resort.. I've done dozens of wheel bearing on VWs and Audis before, but never on a Camry.

For year 1990 this is how it's done. Should be the same or close enough.
Remove knuckle and ball joint.
Remove inner dust cover, inner bearing seal and large snap ring.
Turn hub over. Remove the three bolts holding the outer dust shield plate on.
Toyota uses a puller to remove the hub but a press will work.
Once hub is off, remove outer seal.
Remove old bearing race (may be able to drive out). Press in new bearing.
Install outer seal and bolt on dust cover.
Press in hub.
Install snap ring, inner seal and dust shield.

RE: 1989 Camry, front wheel bearing
I'm finished! The previous owner had been driving for a long time with a bad wheel bearing (I just bought it, have not been driving it more than around 100 miles), so it turned out the hub itself was worn down. (horrible noise from the remains of the bearing) After checking with the dealer that the hub & knuckle had the same part number on 4-cyl and V6, I went to the junkyard and pulled a complete unit from a 4-cyl car. I was lucky, as the bearing looked fairly new, so I decided to just put in some new grease and install it. Turned out just fine - now I can start driving the car.
