Default 1998 camry 2.2 brake noise

Hello,

I have a 98 camry 2.2 LE. When i brake hard there is loud squeak noise coming. It is like coming from front. What could be the reason? Do i need to change the brake pads or something else?

I got it pre-owned so don't know when last it was changed. I have done 15k miles on it since i owned it.

Any advice would be appreciated

Any squeaking when in reverse?

It could be the pads are worn to the extent a little steel tab is now pressing against the rotor. This device lets the owner know the pads are wearing thin.

You can check the pad thickness yourself by turning the steering wheel in the direction of the noise. Removing the tire and looking at the pads installed in the caliper. The pads have a steel backing plate, you want to change them before the brake material wears off to the backing plate.

Squealing front brakes are not uncommon if the pads are OK there are varies things that can be tried to eliminate the squeal.

Thank you Toyo

Today a weird thing happened. When the wheel was turned sideways in parking spot, the car won't reverse or drive. its as if the brake is continously engaged and not allowing it to move. Had to start the car again after pumping the brake for a bit and then it worked.

I have to get it checked today evening for sure. I guess i am looking at around $300 worth of expense. thanks though.

Took it today to Les Schwab. They inspected and brake pads were completely worn, calipers were not in good condition. the timing was good since rotors were not damaged much.

Got both the front brakes done. Cost - $228 with taxes. They also came across a flat in one of the rear tire because of nail. it was fixed too.

Now the brakes are very good.

thank you for replying.
