Toyota Camry 1997-2001: How to Replace Fog Lamps

Don't let the idea of replacing the fog lamps on your Camry scare you. It's a fairly simple project, no matter your skill level, and you likely already have the tools you need at home.

This article applies to the Toyota Camry (1997-2001).

If you know how to replace a fog light bulb, then you're halfway to knowing how to replace the fog assembly and lamp itself. The process starts the same, but requires a few additional steps. Before beginning, be sure you have the right fog assembly and lamp to install. Your owner's manual likely has information about the parts you need, and your local auto parts store likely has the parts in stock or can order them for you.

Materials Needed

  • New fog lamp and assembly
  • 10mm socket and ratchet

Step 1 – Remove four 10mm bolts holding under liner in place

Use 10mm socket and wrench to remove four 10mm bolts holding under liner to car. You don’t need to remove the entire liner. Simply push aside the part that is directly beneath the fog assembly so that you can access it.

Step 2 – Remove fog light bulb socket

Twist fog light bulb socket counterclockwise until you can easily pull it out of the fog light assembly. Let it hang there. You don’t need to remove the fog light bulb in order to replace the fog lamp, but if you want to, then twist the fog light bulb counterclockwise in its socket until you can easily remove it.

Step 3 – Remove fog assembly and lamp

Use 10mm socket and ratchet to remove pair of 10mm bolts holding fog light assembly in place. Pull it and fog lamp out and away from car. If you look at the front of your bumper, you will see the hole where the fog light assembly and lamp fit.

Step 4 – Install new fog lamp

Align mounting points on new fog lamp with mounting points on car. There are two mounting points – one mounting point is located in the upper right hand corner of the assembly, and one mounting point is located on the lower left hand corner of the assembly.

Step 5 – Mount new fog assembly and lamp

Use 10mm socket and ratchet to install pair of 10mm bolts through mounting points.

Step 6 – Re-install fog light socket

Insert harness and socket and twist it clockwise until it snaps into place. If you removed the fog light bulb, re-install it before inserting harness and socket into place.

Step 7 – Reinstall liner

Pull under liner back into place, and then use 10mm socket and wrench to re-install four 10mm bolts that hold it in place.
