This article applies to the Toyota Camry (2002-2006).

The door panel is one of those parts that you don't ever think about, until you need to. For example, if your lock stops working and the door won't open, then diagnosing and resolving the issue likely will require you to remove the door panel. So whether your lock stopped working, your window needs fixing, or your side mirror needs removal, the door panel will need to be replaced. Here's how to do it yourself in the comfort of your own garage.

Materials Needed

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver

Step 1 – Prepare to remove door panel

Open the door and roll down your window. Prepare a safe area where you can place all of your screws and bolts so you don't lose them.

Step 2 – Remove four of the five screws holding door panel in place

Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the four of the five screws holding the door panel in place. There is one screw in the interior door handle, one screw covered by a grommet in the upper right-hand corner of the panel, and two screws on the underside of the door panel.

Step 3 – Remove door pull

Remove the rubber piece in the door pull, and then pull out the door pull. Unclip the connector and wires holding it in place. Position the connector and wires in the space where the door pull fits. Set the door pull aside.

Step 5 – Loosen door panel

Grip the door panel along the bottom, then pull up and out. It should snap out of place, but it won’t come completely off just yet.

Step 6 – Remove plastic cover near corner

Grip and pull out the plastic cover near the upper right-hand corner of the door panel (nearest to the side mirror).

Step 7 – Further loosen door panel

Grip the top and the bottom of the door panel, and pull up and off. The door panel should no longer be connected to the door by anything more than a pair of wires. Since there are wires still holding it in place, you can’t simply set it aside just yet.

Step 8 – Disconnect wires and remove door panel

Reach behind the door panel and disconnect the two wires by carefully pulling them apart. Once the wires are disconnected, the door panel will come right off.

Installment of door panel is reverse of removal:

  • Push door panel in place.
  • Replace plastic triangle cover near upper right-hand corner of door panel.
  • Replace screw inside door pull cavity.
  • Replace door pull and its rubber piece. Reconnect the two wires and connector holding it in place.
