This article applies to the Toyota Camry (1997-2011).

There are few things more annoying than a blown rear speaker. And the rattle, pop, and distortion are determined to ruin your favorite tunes. Whether you need to replace a blown rear speaker, or you simply want to upgrade your Camry's factory speakers with something a little better, removing the rear speakers can be a pain. Just gaining access to them requires removal of several interior pieces and a little bit of contortion in the trunk. Although it can be frustrating, thankfully rear speaker removal still isn't an overly complicated job. Keep reading as this guide will help you through the process.

Materials Needed

  • 12mm and 14mm sockets
  • Ratchet or driver
  • Trim removal tool or flat head screwdriver

Step 1 – Remove the rear seat and padding

The first step is to remove the rear seat. Pull up and then forward on the bottom seat cushion to remove it. There are bolts holding the padding in place, which are located on the left and right side of the rear seats, next to the doors. Use a 12mm or 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the bolts. Then lift each straight up to remove them.

Step 2 – Remove the rear deck

Open the trunk and look for the two plastic snaps holding down the third brake light. Remove the snaps carefully using a trim removal tool. Fold down the rear seat and locate the three clips holding the deck lid in place, then pull up to release them. Slide the deck lid out or push it up out of the way. You will find the speakers underneath the layer of sound deadening foam.

Step 3 – Replace the rear speakers

Remove the rear speakers by removing the four bolts holding each into place and disconnecting the wire harness. Install the new speakers by re-installing the harness and replacing the bolts. Position the sound deadening foam and deck lid back in place, pushing down on the deck lid to snap it back in. Replace the snaps holding the third brake light in place. Lastly, re-install the rear seat padding and rear seat cushion, pushing down on it to lock it back into place.
