I have a 96 IL4 Camry LE, I may need a new set of pulleys. I am installing a new, much larger alternator and the stock belt looks kind of weak. I will know for sure after this weekend when I install the new alternator. I am worried that it will shred the stock belt. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a pulley set with 6 or more grooves.

The stock alt is 70-80 amp, increasing this to say 130 amp should not increase loading that much.  Suggest trying a performance belt first, such as the one below.

I actually am replacing it with a 300 amp alternator, however I do like the idea of trying a better belt as a first step, thank you for the suggestion.


still worried though.

How many grooves does the current pulley have?

Based on pulley and belt HP charts, a 5 groove system should be able to take the added HP provided the belt is OK, a 6 groove even better.

I have five grooves with the stock pulleys, but the alternator in it's original application has six to eight grooves, It's a G3 alternator thats comes stock on late nighties fords, this one came off of a 99 mustang v6 with six grooves, but they are also used in applications as large as f350 diesels with an eight groove setup. It was rebuilt by Excessive Amperage to put out 300 amps an was run with six grooves, although I doubt it will put out more than 280 amps. I think that I will try to run it with a new five groove belt, if that breaks I will step up to a higher load five groove belt then take it from there. I'll post some pictures of it installed after the weekend, if it works out that is.

Do a Google search and look at the HP rating charts for brand name 5V belts, the HP range should be large enough to meet the alt needs.

Buy a performance belt such as those offered by Gates.  A bearing and belt supply house should be able to order it or perhaps a auto store that sells performance parts.

This would be the easiest route.

I installed the alternator today and the stock belt is doing fine, I won't really know how much it can take until I have enough load on the electrical, but it's driving the stock equipment without problems. I had to make a new front bracket/tensioner for it, but it came out looking professional and is charging at idle without problems, I also took it up to 6000rpm without issues.
