wow what a question. You stated best, cheap, and efficient in your question.

are we overhauling the system?
new head unit, speakers, and subwoofer?

if you want something cheap that works go sony.

I'm thinking about a new head unit with speakers, and subwoofers.  Amps if possible.

Alright, and what's your budget?

If you're looking for a good system (you may wish to have someone install it for you) then you're going to spend upwards of $800+ for HU, Speakers, amp and subwoofer.

some places offer free installs if you buy the product at their place. however if you want to take it upon yourself to install it yourself, then i'd suggest doing more research on how to take the panels apart and adapt the after market speakers to fit in the oem slots. They are not a direct bolt on fit, and at times you may have rattling issues. Lastly you need to figure out if you're car has an internal amp on the HU or an external amp (under the glove compartment) for the interior speakers. Subwoofer amp is separate (always). Again if you get a shop to do it, they'll know/figure it out.

Again if you're just looking for an improvement over OEM then you can just buy a whole sony system.

Heres one route i believe you can take.

$119

$60

$70

Sub/Amp Combo
$212

TOTAL: $461 before tax/installs.

You can ask them to install all this for a price. the radio will be a free install (you may need to pay them for a wire harness adapter which isnt that expensive <$20 typically and a Dash kit if you currently have a dual bin system, again not expensive).

I bought 4 6x9 infinity speakers for about $160 and the sound is amazing. Then I added 2 12" MA Audio sub I bought off of ebay brand new in the box with 2 year factory warranty for $81 and a plexi glass sub enclosure for $82 on ebay and a amp and new in-dash deck I paid all together about $450 thats not to bad.

-eeeh; those two words are never to be said in the same sentence! LOL- j/k. I'd go pioneer for deck and polk for speakers because polk requires very little wattage to move 'em and pioneer is the best bang for your buck when it comes to decks. If you get a decent pioneer deck you can ditch the entire external amp for the speakers and just find one for a sub.
