adding cd player to stock system...
 

I am thinking of adding a cd player to the stock system,. right now it is am/fm, is there a cd player that can go in the dash in addition to the stock radio? im not looking for a high quality system just the ability to play discs'. the car has 226k miles, and not going for a show car system. is there a unit that i can possibly change out for the existing that is plug in and go?

Yes, but depends on the current radio installed and year of car. Plus ability to find a unit and at a reasonable cost.

There are alot of older used Toyote OEM radio products being sold on sites like Ebay.

The Toyota radio size was typically either DIM I or DIM II, a single height or double height setup. The space in the dash is typically designed to fit a double height stereo. If the car had a single height system the space below would be filled with a small glove shelf.

The stereo systems in older Toyotas varied. The system could have a seperate CD player bolted below the radio that pluged into the back of the radio. Systems also had a combo CD and stereo as one unit or a combo CD, tape and radio. These system were double height.

A few issues if going the seperate CD player route is to find a Toyota CD player, and one that works. There players were built by various vendors for Toyota and had problems over the years. To repair a unit was costly or not available.

There was a single disk player and a one using a three disk box that was filled with the CD's and slide into the radio. Suggest avoiding the three disk model as it has more problems.

You will also need to determine if the back of the radio has the round female plug that will accept the male plug from the player. You can do this by taking out the radio (easy enough) and looking.

You will need to make sure the stereo fits the year range of the car and has the same harness plug system which could be 1 or 2 plugs.

If buying a complete stereo with the CD player these units came with and without the built in amp depending if a remote amp was used.

Not sure about Camry but Avalon models which used the same design system (and looked the same as Camry) had a theft prevetion system. This was identified by the words "theft prevention system" or something like this on the front. If the radio had this system and an owner code was set. Once DC power was cut off to the radio would no longer work unless the code was input or reset by the dealer which could cost up to $80.

Do an Ebay search an look at the various Toyota stereos offered. Also check Craigslist, etc for owners selling them or parking out their car. Often the stock systems (not the best quality and had problems) were replaced with an aftermarket unit.
