CD Radio Tape ... Toyota OEM
I'm thinking about putting a "Toyota Camry 1990-2001 In-Dash audio unit" into my 1984 Toyota Camry DLX.
I have no doubt that I'll have to find new connectors but wonder if it would fit the dash. Can I get connectors for this unit? Seems like they'd be pretty common. Just think it would look better being an OEM Camry unit rather than some off the wall brand. Any ideas or suggestions, I'll need to put new speakers in also since the originals are too old and don't sound good. I can pick one of these up for about $50 used or $125 refurbished with 45 day guarantee. |
Radio dimensions are standardized by something called the DIN radio size standard. See link below:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_7736 The US standard radio size is 7 x 2 inches typically called Single DIN. A larger height radio would be 7 x 4 inches typically called a Double DIN. This unit takes up 2 spaces. Would assume Toyota used the same DIN size for all years. Measure the old radio dimensions and determine if they meet the above dimensions then inquire about the size of the new radio. The wiring on the radio plug changed between years. There may be adapter harness plug available for the changer over. Try www.installdr.com and www.crutchfield.com websites. Make sure you get a radio that has a built-in amp (which assume the old radio is). Toyota offered upscale radios the used remote amps located in some other part of the car. |

Most helpful, Thank You! I'll inquire to see if the unit includes an amp and see what I can find out about an adapter harness and if it's needed. Think I'll spend the extra bucks for a refurbished unit ($125), that way I can be pretty sure the LCD, light and major components are fully functional. They also mentioned being able to help locate the connectors if mine are gone. The links you provided are going to be helpful. Thanks for steering me in the right direction!! |
