1993 V6-LE hesitates

Hi,
I'm brand new to the forum and glad I found y'all!
I searched for this topic a couple of different ways, but couldn't find an answer. I've never used a forum like this and I may not have done it correctly. So please excuse me if this issue has already been discussed.
I have a 1993 Camry V6-LE that's just a few weeks away from hitting 300,000 miles. It's a nice ride and has been extremely reliable overall. But lately, when I stomp on the gas to pull out into heavy, fast-moving traffic, on a major urban highway, from a dead stop on a side street, with no ramp or merge lane, the engine hesitates. Sometimes it'll make 2 or 3 hesitations as I'm trying to get up to speed. It's not in danger of stalling, it's just not accelerating smoothly or quickly enough when I really need it to jump. I have to make this leap into heavy traffic at least once a day, and the hesitation adds a bit more excitement than I'd prefer to have in an already kinda dicey situation.
Also, sometimes at stoplights, the idle speeds up and slows back down -- rrr-RRR-rrr-RRR-rrr-RRR -- at about one second intervals. This may or may not be related. Aside from these two issues, the engine runs very smoothly and starts easily.
I'm mostly a DIYer, but for some reason I decided to make a first time visit to a nearby Toyota mechanic. He said I needed a "fuel pulsation damper" and the repair would be about $200. That didn't sound quite right for some reason, so I didn't go for it and just paid for the analysis. Besides, I'd really rather do it myself when I can make some time for it. Which I suppose really oughta be soon so I don't get too addicted to the thrill and the suspense.
If I assume the mechanic meant an "EFI pressure damper" does the damper seem like the best place to start??
Thanks!

Yes.

Can buy a pulse damper on line for around $30. Suggest starting here. Easy to replace. Depressurize the fuel system before removing the damper.

Hi Joey,
Thanks for your advice! It's especially useful to know I need to depressurize the system.
