What can I do to get my 94 Camry to pass the Smog check?!

This is a '94 Toyota Camry, obviously with a LOT of miles on it. The Functional and Emissions tests failed. Here are the results of the actual test:

Can you tell me understand what could be done to ensure passing the test? Thanks in advance!

The test date shows the timing is off. It should be 10 degrees. Unless a mechanical or other issue, the timing can be reset to 10 deg by adjusting the distributor rotation.

The other issue is high NO or Nitrous Oxide.

High NO is caused by high combustion chamber temperatures. Causes can be lean fuel/air mixture (how does engine run as in power), high coolant temps (check temp gauge on dash if normal), defective EGR systems (how does engine idle as is normal idle), bad emissions converter, high mileage (does engine burn a LOT of oil).

Incorrect timing can cause high NO, this is the place to start in getting the timing adjusted.

You may be right on track Yoyomoho! The car has a LOT of miles and burns lots of oil as well. I have been thinking that the idle speed is too high. I need to look into that but I can do anything about the emissions converter or even teh EGR valve because I'm on a tight budget. I'm gonna start with checking out the distributor rotation. Thanks!

Not distributor rotation, engine timing. The timing is set by rotating the distributor.

Might try thicker oil to reduce burning.

High idle can also cause emissions issues.

I finally got around to work on this issue!

I just wanted to come back here and thank you for your advice. I already fixed my Camry, using a timing gun that I got at Harbor Freight and it was quite easy. I'm also using thicker oil now. Have a fantastic day!!!

Great job!

Thanks for posting back with the fix.
