1997 timing belt

1997 toyota camry with v6.

i am trying to finish a job on my friends camry since the other guy that started is now in jail.

when i got to the car the belt was taken off and the tming marks are not at 12 oclock they are at like 9 oclock and there not in the same position so now both cams are not inline with eachother. The crank is also off from the cams and block timing marks. The guy never marked the old belt or the cams and crank so now the job is harder than what it should be.

i think i will have to take cam cover off and put piston 1 at TDC and try to set cams in the right spot with the pistons.

the only thing is i am not sure where the valves should be when piston 1 is TDC.

please give me some detailed info on this or any ideas to help me thank you

that sounds complicated, It need more time and effort you could spend to much on that... not sure where to start I haven't see it yet, can you share some photos?

Remove #1 spark plug, use a pencil in hole and gently rotate by hand using bolt on crank pulley, until timing mark on crank aligns.

Temporarily put back on the lower timing belt cover.

Put back on the Crankshaft Pulley and rotate the pulley to set timing to the TDC (Top Dead Center Mark) on the timing belt cover.

Turn the Camshaft pulleys to the alignment marks to match the back plate.
