2009 Camry - check ATF with engine running or not
2009 Camry - 4cyl, 116k
I drained/filled the ATF with WS. The shifting is smoother and the idle 'vibrations' have vanished. I drained a little less than 4 quarts, and replaced the same amount. But now my question is checking for the proper level.
I've always checked the ATF level in my other cars after getting back from a drive where the gear box has had a chance to get nice and warm/hot. I leave the engine idling and then check the level.
On this Camry, does one check the hot level with the engine idling or not? I cannot find any references and want to be sure since transmissions tend to be sensitive to the ATF level.
Also, what is the amount of fluid required to take the level from hot-low to hot-high? I think it's probably less than a 1/2 quart given the markings and the amount I drained.
Thanks.

Trans fluid hot. Engine at idle.
Move shifter from P to L then back to P. Staying in each gear a few seconds.
Check fluid.
If you added as much as you removed, the level should be close.
Don't know the fluid difference between high/low on this trans model. It can be less then 1/2 quart. Add less not more (say 8 oz for between lines) and determine the change in level.
