1. though it costs more, replace with charcoal filter. regular ones, like one I just replaced few mths ago, allow outside smells in. charcoal blocks them.
2. filter does not go in only one way; there's arrow on the filter side and letters UP. Make sure you have it installed the right way, arrow pointing up.
