'95 Camry cooling issue
Hey all I would like to thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
Ok I have a 95 Camry with a 2.2L and it's developed some issues. First is that the temp stays towards the low end of the gauge but the car is obviously hot. The upper radiator hose is really hot while the bottom is almost ambient tempature. While it's idling I'm getting no heat from the heater and the fans ran for a min and then went off and stayed off. I replaced the thermostat with a brand new one and same thing. I've raised the front end for any trapped air and no luck. I'm debating whether to replace the water pump even though I don't see any leaks or hear any noise. Changed the oil and no traces of coolant. I'm kinda stumped. |
Use a thermometer to check the coolant temp at the radiator filler inlet as the engine warms up. Fans should start up around 199F.
When you installed the new T-stat did you place the hole or rivet in the T-stat flange in the top position? Does the heater temp rise if you rev the engine? Does the coolant temp rise if the engine is allowed to idle for long periods of time? |
Thanks for the reply. I've worked on it today and heres where I'm at. I did install the thermostat correctly. Turns out that the problem was a massive amount of air. I parked it on a steep incline and let it idle and it took about another quart of coolant as it bled. The heater now blows very hot and the coolant circulates. If I let it idle long enough the fans kick on like normal. Had the relays checked and they were fine.
Still have one issue I'm working on. The temp gauge reads very low. Still in the "green" but the needle is even with the C on the gauge no matter how much you drive it and regardless of conditions. Drove it in stop and go and on the highway. I know the temp is changing based on the fans kicking on and off. I replaced the coolant temp sensor near the intake and it didn't fix it. Last thing I'm guessing is the sensor on bottom of the radiator. |
The engine has several coolant temp sensors and switches.
The sensor on the bottom of the radiator is the switch for the fans. There are two sensors on the coolant outlet pipe from the cyl head. One for the engine computer, one for the temp gauge. The temp sensor has one wire, the engine sensor has two. |
Guess I changed the one for the engine. Thank you very much for the info.
