I have a 2003 camry with stripped head bolt threads in the block. Seems to be a common problem with the 4cyl engines from this year. Can anyone tell me if the motor from the year models before this one will bolt right up? Like the 4cyl from a 1998 model

 

The Camry engine model was changed in 2002. Earlier engines are not the same model.

Have you considered repairing the block threads. This is now a common DIY job.

Prior to the head bolt threads failing, how was the engines oil consumption? Some engines also suffered from high oil consumption.

 

oil consumption is normal. How can I repair the the threads in the block? Helicoils?

 

Suggest NOT using Helicoil.

Some have used something called a Time-Sert. There are also kits put out by vendors, one being called NS300L for this engine model (2AZFE) which have longer inserts.

Search the net under "repairing 2AZFE head bolt threads." You will find posts, video's, etc on repairing this engine. This site has a lengthy thread on this issue.

The cause of the head bolt thread issue may be poor design combined with uneven heating of the head, the type of head gasket used and low coolant.

Read as much as you can on the subject before buying anything.
