checking out the timing belt.

my 96 camry died and i am going to check out the timing belt. is there anything i should be looking for? it is a 2.2liter with 235,000 miles no leaks that i can see so far, not low on oil,a little low on water now, never overheated, ran fine until it died.:(

If engine has a distributor, remove cap. Crank engine over and determine if the rotor turns.

If no dist, remove valve cover and look at belt.

took timing cover off,the only hard part was the crank bolt, but it came off finally. the belt was ok,a little loose but fine,no water leaks. when i turned the engine ccw for a second something inside dropped and fell to the bottom of the oil pan so that is my next project. i am thinking a new to me engine but now my interest is peaked,i have an inspection camera so i can drain the oil and look inside the drain hole or sell the whole thing to pull and save but the rest of the car is good. maybe part it out,not sure.

Rotate engine CW as this is its normal rotation.

Check valve train operation and cam/crank pulley alignment.

When you find the dropped part, post a photo.
