Fluid Type and Specs for Differential

For my 1989 Camry with an automatic transmission and separate differential compartment, the owner's manual and factory service manual calls for Dexron ATF in the differential (albeit Dexron ii). Someone suggested that GL-4 gear oil would offer better protection in the differential. Any thoughts? Thanks

In most Camry, the automatic portion of the trans fails while the differential portion seldom has problem unless run out of lubricant.

Gear oil was recommended for the manual trans.

Suggest sticking with Dexron or it's replacement for auto.

Could use synthetic ATF. Something like Valvoline Maxlife ATF.
