Gas Tank Removal
 

I'm working on a family members 1994 Camry and notice gas is leaking at a good rate out of the tank. So i pull the exhaust off and the exhaust shield and noticed they have hit something and it has put a small pinhole in the tank, so obviously i need a new tank, which i found for $35. My question is, is there a write-up on how to drop the tank. im very mechaically inclined but i dont want to break any fuel lines while i do this. Any tricks or advice would be appreciated as well.

There is an oval access cover under the lower rear seat cushion. The seat pulls up from the front having 2 "plug in" type attachments one near each corner under the front edge of the seat. Reach under the front of the seat cushion and pull up, you will notice where the resistance occurs near each end. Pull straight up then once "unplugged" the seat can be pulled forward to remove it.

Removing the seat will expose an oval access cover behind the drivers side. This will provide access to disconnecting the fuel pump, gas gauge sender plus fuel line outlet.

The fuel system may also have a fuel return line. The fuel goes to the engine fuel rail, is regulated by the pressure regulator then excess fuel returned to the tank. Thus look for the possibility of 2 fuel lines.

There is also a small EVAP pipe attached to the top of the tank. If you have the replacement tank you can locate this fitting on the tank.

The tank is held in place by 2-straps each having a bolt at one end and a swivel pin at the other. Remove the bolts and the tank will be unsupported.

There would be a large fuel inlet pipe and a smaller breather pipe running next to it.

You may be able to remove the plastic bracket around the large filler inlet (behind the gas fill door, open the filler door) plus any attachment fittings holding the 2 pipes to the frame. There is also a plastic shield protecting the pipes that can be removed to provide access, look under the car to see this. Once everything is disconnected the filler and vent pipe may just come out with the tank. Both pipes are attached to tank with flexible rubber hoses.

When lowering the tank watch out for the EVAP pipe stated above as it may not be attached to the tank at the access cover and still need to be removed. This would be attached with a section of rubber hose.
