high "idle" (long post, sorry)
 

Hi there folks. I am new to this forum, and I have an urgent problem which I am hoping somebody can help me with

The car is a 2004 Camry, with a 2FE (4 cyl, 16 valve) engine.

I have just finished replacing the head, due to 4 burnt valves (long story).

The car starts fine, and runs well, but wont "idle" below 1800 rpm.

I have checked all vacuum hoses, all electrical connections, (which would be very hard to get wrong) and checked that nothing is fouling the butterfly in the throttle body (TB). It is a cable operated throttle.

Valve timing is spot on, and all the valve clearances have been checked and adjusted with new followers. Compression is really good now as well

Now, when the engine was sick, I adjusted the idle up a bit by using the screw on the side of the TB. I am not sure how many turns I moved it, but, in order to get the revs down, I have slackened it right off with no apparent effect.

I have also checked the MAF sensor by disconnecting it, and when disconnected, the engine dies.
I cannot hear or see any vacuum leaks anywhere, and there are no stray hoses etc.
However, when I open the aircleaner box, it seems to make a small difference to the revs in that they drop a bit. Also, if I hold my hand in front of the air intake, ther revs rise a bit.

I am, atm, at my wits end, and the missus is going to get cranky 'cos it's her car!

The only thing that I can't check is the crankshaft position sensor, which needs to be installed a specific way, but I figure that if it wasn't right, it wouldn't run (properly??)

I am hoping that somebody out there might be able to shed some light on the problem, so, over to you..............

Do you mean a 2AZ-FE engine?

The throttle system uses a cable, not an electric motor?

On most Camry there is no idle adjustment, the computer does this.

Exactly what screw did you turn?

Does the engine otherwise run OK, but just have a high idle issue?

Yes sorry, it is the 2AZ engine. It has a cable to the TB through the cruise control.

The screw I adjusted is on the side of the TB, where the cable wraps around the butterfly crank. It can (does?) adjust the butterfly in the TB.

Yep, Engine runs fine, only the high revs issue.

I have checked all over for vacuum leaks with Aerostart without success, and have quadruple checked all connections and hoses. All good.
