Default Ignition coil primary circuit codes

Just finished putting my used engine in a 2013 2.5 i bought with a bad motor and im getting ignition coil primary control circuit open for all 4 cylinders. I switched out the coils for the originals and still persists. Also switched entire engine harness. Fuses are good, any pointers? Could the junkyard have given me the wrong engine? I ordered the ulev emissions engine because it said the pzev wasn't compatible, I noticed a post somewhere else saying the timing being off can cause these codes and the difference between the emissions is supposed to be in the cam gears. Codes present are p0354 x2, p0351, p0352, p0353, p0354

Update, confirmed the engine is correct. 12volts from power wire, ground is less than an ohm. Codes immediately reset after clearing, before even starting engine. Any ideas?

Do you have a service manual or some diagnostic information?

Does the engine run and if so normally?

All coils have a signal return wire in common. This sends a signal to the computer the coil has fired. A problem with the wire can cause all these codes.

Try running the VIN through an online VIN decoder for Toyota's to determine what emissions standard it meets.

Check online Toyota parts dealers to determine the if engine parts, sensors, coil part numbers are different between emissions standards you listed.

VIN Decoder - YotaTech Forums

The basic engine is stated to be the same.

For $25 Toyota offers 2 days access to service info. The manual has detailed diagnostic info.

It runs, but not well. It starts pretty smooth but roughens out after a few seconds. I've followed the toyota flowchart to the best I can with what I have; with that info and considering the parts I've changed I think ive narrowed it to the ecm. Codes persist across two full sets of coils and two engine wiring harnesses. Codes immediately reset after clearing even if the engine has not been started, which shouldn't happen until after the engine is fired.

Possible ECM. Before you go further might ask at Toyotanation.com. More members! Seach the forums for your trouble code listings.

Was the previous engine setting codes?

If you are looking for low cost ECM try Ebay or junkyard.

Not sure if the 2013 has a generic ECM as in one can swap for another one if it has the same exact part number with no programming required.

Assume the engine running rough sets the codes. Is the ECM causing this? ECM failure is rare.

Does the replacement engine have different sensors then the old engine? The ECM could be looking for a signal from the old sensor and not getting it. Depending on the setup swapping old with sensors is SOP to get the ECM to work OK. Old and new may be constructed different and work different. Check part numbers between old and new engine sensors.

I stupidily didn't check the codes when I bought it, just took the guys word that a shop said the head gasket was blown. Further investigation shows that 4 is not firing at all. Switched coil and plug from 3 and 4 is still dead. 12v and ground are both good. The other 2 wires run directly to the ecu, so since the problem persists across two separate wiring harnesses, it can only be the ecu. I've got a reman coming from flagship one, supposed to be plug and play. If that doesn't fix it I have absolutely no clue what else it could be.

New update! Rebuilt computer came in today and it 100% fixed the misfire; runs and drives good, idles a little low, but now has 4 codes it didn't have before and they won't delete. P0453, p0010, p0013, p0102. Computer place screw up?

See private message.

P0453 is EVAP pressure too high. Could be bad wiring, bad sensor.

P0010 is camshaft position actuator. Make sure the replacement and old engine use the same actuator

P0013 is camshaft actuator.

P0102 is low MAF signal.

I switched the vvt actuators, cleaned the maf, and went and drove it for a while. Now it's only showing the p0453 code which I can live with. It does seem to have the infamous torque converter shudder at about 1800 rpms at slow speeds, but not if manually shifted. Guessing fluid change is in order?

Could be a bad EVAP pump.

How many miles on the trans fluid?

This year had a torque converter issue.
