Ignition Kill Switch?
I'd like to install a switch to prevent thieves from hot-wiring or using a screwdriver to start my car.
I don't want it connected to the battery, because turning off power shuts down the radio, such that I'd have to enter a complicated code to get the radio to run. Thanks |
Do you have a wiring diagram? If so find the +12V wire going to the fuel pump. Most likely runs along the drivers side rocker panel. Spice in your on/off switch wiring and install switch in a not obvious location. This is a tried and true approach.
If someone tries to hot wire the car. Engine might start but will die within seconds. |
Thanks.
Where are some good locations to place the switch? Is it better to install the kill switch at the fuel pump relay or on the ignition coil wire? Any specifications on the switch you'd recommend, eg lever or button type, two-prong or three-prong? thanks |
For mounting locations see private message.
For the switch type. Most on/off toggle switches should work. Single pole, single throw. See link below: 12 Volt DC switches,12 and 24 volt heavy duty toggle switches, push pull switches See switch No 5582. Best for easy mounting if the switch installs in a round hole. Plus has screws for the wiring end terminals instead of push on. |
Thanks.
I did an experiment last night, removing the EFI 15 Amp fuse and cabin light, 20 Amps. Car wouldn't start until I put back in. Great! However, radio doesn't work; factory that needs complicated sequence of pushing to turn on. What did I do wrong? Thanks |
Your issue may be removing a fuse which also powers other electrical items including radio.
Try the 10A ENGINE or 7.5A IGN fuse. |
