key in ignition warning chime 2000 camry

i'm new to this forum and have searched the faq's and other threads but can't seem to find a specific solution to my problem: i have a 2000 camry XLE and whenever i leave the key in the ignition and open the door to clean out the car the warning chime drives me crazy. is there a way to safely disconnect or disable the chime?

nope ..the chime is there so you dont lock your keys in the car -- could even be the seat belt warning

a toyota electronic designer went to a lot of trouble to wire in that chime

when cleaning out your toyota you are supposed to have the radio up real loud (well in my neigbourhood -they think so )

thanks, dirty hands. i realize the reason for the chime but it becomes redundant when the doors won't lock anyway with the key in the ignition. maybe the toyota engineer was formally an aircraft engineer. their middle name is redundancy. as for cranking the volume up to 11, MY neighbours would call the cops.

still hoping there is a way to disable the chime.

The chime is built into the integration relay. It is powered by fuses that also power other circuits, pulling a fuse or cutting a wire will not work.

A switch could be installed that bypasses the seat belt switch or obtain a seat belt from a auto yard and cut off the buckle. Then slide the buckle into latch.

after reading toyomohos explaination

I would agree with bwdebeck
maybe the toyota engineer was formally an aircraft engineer.

there may be a wiring diagramme available ---- cant find one today

the chime itself would be behind the instrument cluster or up under the dash

i don't care about the seat belt chime. it stops after a few seconds or if i buckle up. it is only the "key in ignition" that triggers the alarm that drives me crazy.

Follow the chime sound to its source.

The seat belt and ign key systems are integrated.

Disable Chime

I discovered that if you unplug one of the wires near the ignition key cylinder, it will deactivate the chime when the key is in the ACC position. It will still chime with the key in the ON position, but we're halfway there.

I would like to just unplug the chime speaker, if I could find it. Does anyone know exactly where it is located and how to access it?

a blast from the past

scottbachus: wow! i had completely forgotten about this forum over the past 5 years. if i can figure out how to get to the ignition switch wires (laying on my back with my feet sticking out the door is not the most comfortable position to be in) i will give your solution a try. i had fun pulling out the instrument panel a couple of weeks ago and replacing a warning bulb. i no sooner got it back in when another light went out.
