Known issues? - Camry 2004 LE, v6
 

Hello everyone,

We’re just about to purchase this vehicle, 55K miles on it (wow!). Auto trans.

I would like to hear from owners with experience - what are the likely known issues that I should be looking for?

Scan tool reveals a bad speed sensor - looks to be a simple fix.

A look while over the pit reveals exhaust system flanges have quite a bit of corrosion.

Previously installed components such as struts, etc, were apparently put in without adequate attention to re-assembly - cable ties missing, radiator fan left off it’s bottom supports….. again, looks easy enough to fix.

Cabin air filter is dirty. Fluids all look good. Owner will supply paperwork on it’s service history. That’s good.

Looking forward to hearing any ideas. I would have preferred to get a 4 cylinder version, as ‘the client’ (family member who will receive this) has no interest in taking care of a vehicle…. A pity.

The V6 and trans are good to go.

If a V-6 check when the timing belt was replaced and if the engine has VVTi. If so the engine is now interference and if the belt breaks damage can happen.

Toyotanation.com has a Camry forum by generation (5th) where one can find out all the good and bad.

My 1995 is a belt bit noninterference. Even with non-interference you could have problems if a belt breaks. That is what I read.

If an engine is listed as non-interference then the only thing you have to be concerned with is lining up the timing marks at the crank and cam pulleys when you replace the broken belt. Back in the late eighties me and my wife had a 1984 Volvo 240 Turbo that broke the timing belt. No harm to the valves and pistons because it was a non-interference engine. The replacement was quite easy...I just lined up the crank pulley and cam pulley to their marks, set the tension and put the timing cover back on.
