Is my 21 year old airbag safe?

I have a 98 Camry that I have decided to restore to a healthy (if a bit unattractive) state.

After a lot of rewarding work, one of my remaining concerns is whether my airbag will work properly or randomly blow up in my face in its old age.

Am I correct to be concerned? What should I do?

It appears unless there is a recall on the airbag it should be fine.

Check the sun visor and owners manual as some Camry years stated to have the airbag system checked after xx years.

However there is not much that can be checked accept perhaps for visible degradation of the unit. The airbag system has a self test function which is done at every ign key on.

A study was done of approx 1000 used car airbags (some cars were very old and in bag shape) to determine if they still worked. All worked.

If you are banging around the car. Remove a battery cable and wait 90 seconds to disarm the system. Don't bang around the front end of the car as this is where the front impact sensors are.

There may be one in the center console.

Crash sensors are one time use and don't reset.

Get some kind of manual that shows where sensors are located.

The wiring for the airbag system is typically yellow.

Don't disconnect any airbag wiring and then turn on the ign key or a trouble code will be set.

Thank you!

Thanks! I’ll read the visor. That all makes me feel better. I didn’t consider that it does a self-check when I start.
