Please Help: Adjusting the TPS sensor on 1999 Camry 2.2L
 

Hi everyone,

I stumbled on this forum while looking for some information adjusting the TPS on my '99 Camry 2.2L.

First off, allow me to apologize if my questions are confusing, as I am a laymen when it comes to the terminology.

So I recently got a check engine light on my gauge cluster that read as a bad TPS sensor (which I replaced). I have searched the internet high an low, and cannot for the life of me find:

1. A diagram showing which connector pins on the TPS (3-pin) I should be testing

2. What the Volt/Ohm output I should be setting the TPS at (in other words what the normal reading I should be shooting for while the car is idling)

I am hoping that the issues Im experiencing (searching for gears, surging, lack of power, etc.) will be remedied by a correct adjustment of the TPS.

If any one of the gurus here could help me out it would be very much appreciated!! Thanks in advance for your help!

With pins oriented vertical and the integral plastic plug locking device on the TPS (keeps harness plug locked to sensor plug) oriented to the right side, from top to bottom the pins are:
VTA
E2
VC

Disconnect the vacuum hose to the throttle opener. The opener is a small can (dash pot) that opens the throttle slightly when engine off. With engine running vacuum retracts the dash pot pin to allow the throttle to close further.

Check following at pins of TPS with harness unplugged:

With throttle completely closed (dashpot pin retracted) VTA and E2 0.2-5.7 Kohms

Fully open. Same connections 2.0-10.2 Kohms

Throttle position does not matter VC and E2 2.5-5.9 kohms

Note: Toyota uses their scan tool to set TPS.

Check voltage between following wire of harness plug (disconnected from TPS) and ground ign key on. VC and ground. 4.5-5.5v

Check voltage between the following wires at the engine computer, ign key on.

VTA and E2. Throttle fully closed 0.3-1.0v
Fully open. 3.2-4.9v

Check for open or shorts in wiring between TPS and computer.
