Repairing Fake cloth top
 

I have a 2001 D'elegance camry. It has a fake convertible top that is starting to come undone by the rear window. How can I fix it? I can't find any info about how it might come off to re-glue the cloth.

Do you mean a vinyl top?

I don't think it is vinyl. It looks and feels like canvass. I will take a picture when I get home.

Typically these tops were sold as kits and installed by a third party shop.

Can call around to upholstery/custom car shops who might install them and ask for advice.

The top installation can be very involved including a fiberglass pan for some designs.

Looks like the white material is padding for the top. The material appears to be unfolding starting from the passengers side. You could try to refold the material back under the black top material to hide it and puff up the black material.

Contact cement or a 3M spray adhesive may have been used.with the installation. If you use adhesive to try to hold the white material apply it under the white material to hold to the surface below. You don't want adhesive seeping into the black material.

Guessing the black material floats on the white (not glued) to give it a simulated convertible top effect.

Whatever you, take your time! The installation of the tops may be very involved. Removal a PIA plus plus never being able to restore the car to its original condition before the top was installed.

Thanks for the info. I figured it was not factory since I could not find any info about it. I think a dealership did it since I have seen other Camry's in my area with the same fake convertible top and BBS wheels as mine.

Perhaps the dealer can provide a few tips or things to not do when repairing the top.
