Shudder in 2007 Camry SE
 

I have a shudder when driving my 2007 Camry SE (transaxle). Much worse going up hill, barely noticeable going down hill. The car has215 k miles, almost all highway miles. Any idea what might be causing it or what I can do to diagnose the problem.

Shudder as in car shakes, steering wheel shakes or what?

How is the MPG?

Try going up a hill in a lower gear and its effect on shudder.

6 cylinder. Shudders pretty bad when accelerating. Steering wheel pretty steady. The MPG might be down 1 or 2 MPG. I have not tried in lower gear, but not too noticeable until about 40 mph.

When driving and having shudder keep foot on gas and tap brake. Determine if shudder goes away.

Drive with the trans overdrive turned of using O/D switch (switch is now out) and determine if problem still occurs.

Sounds like an axle problem
 

I had the same problem with my 2007 Camry SE. The shudder occurred during acceleration and could be quite severe at times. But at times it didn't do it at all. After doing a lot of research I was convinced the shudder was due to a bad torque converter. Fortunately someone referred me to an honest mechanic. That gentleman was nice enough to road test the car with me, and he very quickly told me it was an inner CV joint. He went so far as to tell me it was the drivers side axle. He was half right. I replaced the drivers side axle and it did not fix the problem. So I changed out the passenger side and that did the trick. I dissected the the inner CV joint and found worn away metal in places where it should not be worn. I surmise that when the rollers tracked into those worn spots (depressions) I got the shudder. Yet it still only occurs during acceleration when there is torque on the joint. There are YouTube videos showing you how to do both axles. Do watch them if you are considering changing them yourself. My car is over 200K miles so I went with aftermarket parts which set me back less than $200 for both axles. If they give me another 100K I'll be thrilled!
