Valve cover gasket on 99 Camry 5sfe

I am looking to change the valve cover gasket on my '99 camry (4cyl, 5sfe). I bought a new felpro gasket set that comes with the gasket and tube seals. The only question I have is that the manual says to put gasket sealer on a few "trouble spots" on the gasket. However, the instructions for the felpro gasket say to install it dry, without any sealers. Which instructions should I listen to? I don't want to do it wrong and then have to redo all of my work!

Thanks!

I don't know for sure. Gasket materials have changed since 1999 when the car was made.

I typically use a gasket sealer all the way where the gasket meets the head.

Plus this engine is known for valve cover leaks.

Suggest something like Permatex Right Stuff black which works well. If you want you can limit the application to the problem areas. Take note of the sealant directions which may require a 24 setup time. Thus if possible let the car sit for 24 hours before starting. Toyota has their own brand of sealant.

The Permatex sealant has worked will with engines having major problems with valve cover leaks even if all caution plus a quality gasket was used in the installation. But it takes 24 hours to harden.

Make sure to retorque up the valve cover nuts until the torque values hold. Then wait 1/2 hour or so and recheck as the gasket may relax.
