2003 Camry code p0012
 

Hi all,

I just finished the timing chain and headgasket job (w/timeserts for the block, woo hoo,fun,fun,fun)

Anyway I checked the timing 4 times and rotated the engine several times to check the marks, I released the chain tensioner prior to rotating it. The car starts and runs great, good power, nothing weird happening.

I have an active code P0012 "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1), reset and it comes back when driving everytime.

I did see possible causes as a bad VVT actuator or maybe needing an updated tensioner.
also saw a bulliten for the 06's the mine doesn't apply to.

Any ideas? how to check it out? when I monitor cam timing its fluctuating just as it should, I can monitor all streaming data. HELP. Might anyone have toyotas troubleshooting for this code?

The wife is thrilled I got her car done but it sucks the light is on.

one more thing, I can't find my headgasket post from a month ago, did someone delete all the history?

Not up on VVTi. Check if there is a separate oil line external of the block going to the cam VVTi system. Sometimes the little oil screen filter inside the VVTi system plugs up and causes a code to trip. Others have complained about this.

If you have this setup remove the pipe at the VVTi and clean the screen.

No oil feed line, oil is fed through the head.

Did a little more troubleshooting and was able to turn the VVT actuator on via MT2500, before when I engaged it the car ran real rough (prior to major job). Now nothing happens at all, so i'll bring a meter and power probe home friday and see if I get voltage to the VVT actuator and remove it and actuate it myself. When removing the headbolt under #2 bearing the bolt did rub the VVT a good bit coming up perhaps it bent the housing the slightest bit and jammed it? After looking at the pic below, the VVT is in the lower tight hand corner then the oil flows to the camshaft to the left of it. By rubbing it I think I tweeked it and the plunger is jammed. I'll update Saturday.
