I was told I need an ECU/ECM
 

Hi you guys. I had some evap codes come up on my car. I got a smoke test done and no leaks were detected. I was told to take the car to Toyota. Toyota called me half an hour ago saying that the codes had nothing to do with a leak and they are positive that I need an ECU/ECM (Evaporative control module). The Toyota service person told me the car will run fine and she suggested to just ride it out. She told me Toyota no longer makes that part anymore so she can't order it and the part will cost about 2 grand. Shebsaidni could look online to see if I can find it cheaper. She told me to be careful getting a used one and try to go for new.

I'm just so mad and worried. I just got this car. It is a 2000 Toyota Camry. Does anyone have suggestions ?

she gave me the part number which is 89666-06121. Isnthere anyone that lives in the Hampton roads VA area with suggestions on places that can help for cheap?

ECU/ECM is not the evaporator control module but the engine computer. The part number is for the engine computer.

Do a internet search on the part number 89666-06121. Ebay list used ones, cheap. Get one having some kind of 30 day return time in case its bad.

There are rebuilds on the internet for around $450.

These computers are year/model/engine/option specific. Get the specific part number as advised.

The computer is a bolt-on and hook up the wiring plugs job (easy to install). Location is the far passengers side of the car, under the dash and against the frame. Disconnect battery before swapping the part.

If car drives OK now, then no hurry to replace. But may not pass a smog test if the check engine light is on.

I'm confused. She said it's also known as the Evap control module and that's why those evap codes are coming up.

Can you check with the person you spoke with at the dealer for clarification?

What the dealer rep may be trying to tell you is:

The problem with the car may not be due to evaporator control module. The problem may be the cars ECU/ECM (computer) is not working correctly and generating false trouble codes. The fix then is to replace the computer.

However the computer is not available anymore from the dealer and you need to look for a used or rebuilt one. The part number provided by the dealer is for the computer. The part number has nothing to do with the evaporator control module

Parts for the evaporator control module system are available. Would assume if this was the problem, the dealer would have replaced the part or told you this was the problem and never mentioned the computer.

It has happened the computer fails generating fails codes and needs to be replaced.
