OBD scanners unable to "link"
 

My 2001 Camry has had a check engine light on for two weeks. It seems to run fine, although my son, who drives it the most, reports "spots" where it runs a little rough.

So, I took it to AutoZone yesterday, they hooked up two different OBD scanners, and neither could establish a link to my car. I was advised to check the fuse. Today, I pulled the fuse for the OBD, and it looked fine. I swapped with another 7.5V fuse (the radio) and the radio worked fine.

Does the Camry have any history where the OBD itself goes bad?

cant answer that.... I dont know about any 2001 camrys having that issue

should be ok as long as they used an odb2 scanner with the correct cable
and software reads toyota fault codes

its 15 years old
maybe over the years the pins in the diagnostic plug itself might bend or break

if the plug is the problem ..you can replace the plug

The plug and code reader connects to the computer at four pins in the ODB plug.

It could be a bad connection at these pins.

Pins 4 and 5 are grounded.

Pin 16 is 12v power.

Pin 7 is the actually signal from the computer.

Using the pin guide in the link below, check pins 4, 5 and 16 for ground or power.

You can also spray a electrical contact cleaner into the plug. Don't use WD-40.

There is no ODB computer. The plug connects to the engine computer. On rare occasion this computer fails and does not allow access to the OBD system.
