starter runs with key off?!

i have a 99 camry v6. it has lately been having trouble starting. that trouble being that with the key in the start position, the starter will begin starting and like it has a power loss, stops spinning. i have to turn the key off and try again. most of the time is only takes a couple tries to keep the starter spinnign long enough to get the motor started.

today, it did its normal thing, but when i turned the key off, the started kept spinning. good thing it didn't start because i could not get the starter to shut off. by the time i got a wrench and disconneted the battery, it was dead.

i have searched the foru, but can't find anything with this symptom. any thoughts?

is this a starter problem or an ignition short of some sort?

i've never had a car do this before?

thanks in advance!

well it looks like the contacts in the starter had welded themselves together which kept the current flowing even with the starter relay out of the fuse block. hope thats all it is.

The Toyota dealer may have replacement contacts for sale. They can be replaced without taking the starter off the engine.
