te1 e1 paperclip read on 94 cylinder camry wont work
 

My 1994 4 cylinder (93 engine) died yesterday, and has no spark. Tried the paperclip trick to get a code read, but it just flashes continually with no pauses.

Any suggestions on where to start?

Also, is there a cable adapter I can buy to read it to obd2?

thought it was an obd1 system on the 94 .. an obd2 will read the codes
and a cable should come with the obd2 diagnostic tool kit

so it is cranking has fuel ....but no spark
any immobilizer fitted to the 94
any fuses blown
coil packs or dissy module

some "no spark " causes do not have a code

if no engine light on then no spark has another cause

If there are no codes, the check engine light will flash 2 times per second CONSTANTLY with no patterns or pauses.

diagnostic port in engine bay

make sure the paper clip is in firmly at both contacts

-Turn the ignition switch ON. Do not start engine!
-Short terminals TE1 and E1 of the DIAGNOSIS connector (DLC1).
-Count the flashes of the "Check Engine" light.

Did that. It just flashes with no pause, or sequence , which is why I need to put a reader on it. Port appears to be semicircle. In my search for a affordable obd1 reader I saw some adapter cables which may allow use of an obd2 to obd1. But they did not get in specifics on their ebay page on what they work on.


car went into low power then died btw, if that helps any.

I have a 94 as well and I did the paperclip thing just to see if I had any codes and mine also just kept flashing. I THINK this means there is no code being thrown. I've read the continual blinking means there are no codes to read. Hope this helps

94GoldCam is correct. There are no codes stored.

Make sure the distributor is receiving +12V power with ign switch on and the connectors are not loose.

Check ign coil for cracks.

Does the distributor have the coil built in or is it remote?

I have no idea. checking it in a bit

Thanks for posting back with the fix.

Spoke too soon. Ran fine after new distributor, next morning would not start. Back to the drawing board.

Must have cracked water temp sensor next to distributor will taking it out. Replaced it, and it's working fine now.
