1996 Toyota Camry Timing Belt

Hi Everyone:

I have a 1996 Toyota Camry that has been making a weird noise at about 200 rpms (almost as if a piece of plastic is smacking against something inside the engine) so I took it in to a shop that specializes in imports. They advised me that it appears to be a timing belt issue and recommended I get a timing belt package done for $700. I don't have the extra money right now to put into this car but also don't want to risk blowing the engine.

I have been told that the 1996 Toyota Camry's have a non-interference engine but when I asked the guy at the shop about it he said that it is an interference engine . Is he lying hoping to get the repair job or was I misinformed previously?

Thanks for the help!!!

Do you mean 2000 rpm?

Is this a 4 cylinder engine, if so it is non-interference.

What was included in the timing belt package?

Would assume the shop check the exposed belts such as power steering and alternator but would recheck.

Timing belt replacement being common, check with other shops for lower prices. The Camry is well known, any competent shop should be able to do the work. $700 is in order with Toyota dealer repair costs. The belt may cost $20-40, a kit $50-90, the rest is labor. A competent DIY car owner should be able to do the job in 3 hours, a shop a couple of hours. Shop around for prices.

Yes, I probably meant 2,000 not a car person but know how to check the oil. It may be a v-6 but I will have to check that out... Thank you for your help!

The V6 of this year is also non-interference.

Timing belt labor, parts cost, etc would be about the same as 4 cylinder.

Perfect! It is a V6. Thank you so much again for your help!!!
