92 2.2 cuts in and out at high rpm...drive 65 all day no issues
 
Ok...so I got this 92 Camry with the 2.2L auto.

I off the bat had to change the coil for out of the blue just started giving me issues. Anyways I drove the car for about 2 weeks after that and one day I went to pass a car and stuck it to the floor. When it got to about 4k rpms it started cutting in and out so I let off a little and it came outta it.

So since then I have played with it.

If I hold it to the floor is goes then doesn't then goes and then doesn't. It's never the same rpm but it is definably 3500 rpm and higher when it does it and I have only noticed it when the peddle is to the floor.

Now it doesn't do it all the time. There is days I drive the car all day and it never does it and others it does it left and right.


Ok the car has 205,000 miles and the best way I can explain what it's doing is like this

Your driving and you shut off the ignition and then turn it back on. There is no sputter or anything it's either there or not.

So I've thought maybe the crank sensor not telling the injectors to fire? or cam sensor not telling it to spark?

To me it doesn't seem like it's a spark issue cause when it kicks back in it jerks ya with the power so it don't act like I'm pouring fuel in and then adding spark. It acts as if all of a sudden you put it to the floor.

Anyone have had this problem or what not?

It's still driveable and not giving me issues so I'm not going to start throwing parts on it. But if we all seem to agree on something or someone says they have had this issue then I'm sure to fix it now. I just figure it's only a matter of time before this issue becomes a bigger issue and really shows it's self.

nope everytime it's happened it's been hot and dry out.

I got on it several times today and it didn't give me any issues...not even a sputter. Rain and drove like a dream.

You are stating it only happens when the gas pedal is floored, not when you press lightly on the gas?

I think this is happening to me as well, but on a worse scale.

I've recently did a top engine rebuild of the camry (totally clueless and noob). and now the car wont climb above 40kmph, and everytime I push the throttle a bit, the engine RPMs will start to become erratic and just climb and drop instantly.

To stop this you have to let off the throttle and apply the most minute of throttle pedal, but with that in mind, I can't climb to above 40kmph!

I've played around with the engine timing but to no avail :(

I think it may have been the piston positioning when I placed the cylinder head back on, and placed the 2 camshafts almost "any position", but with the white dot meeting each other. So at a high RPM, the cams may be out of sync and causing a earlier fire in the cylinder, which of course will cause the RPMs to drop. At least that's what I believe is happening.

so I have drove this car for like what 3 weeks since my last post or whenever it was and haven't had this issue at all. But yesturday it happened to me again. I had a 1/4 tank of gas and was getting ready to fill up and it did it. So far hasn't done it again. I'm just kinda confused on it. almost acts like I have some bad gas there somewhere but I pretty well run it to the E before fulling up ever time.

Any change in type of gas used, as in ethanol versus non-ethanol.

I think your problem might be different to mine then. I think mine has some mechanical issues, whilst yours may have something to do with the fuel/air mixture. ie it might be running too rich/lean
