95 4cl 2.2L into a 97 Camry that had a 5F-SE?

Greetings, looking for some advice on an engine swap. My son's 97 Camry 5F-SE 2.2L 4cl took a turn for the worse. I'm being told a 95 2.2L 4cl would work as a replacement. In some of my research it appeared the V20 engine had some changes in 1997 that might make this difficult. Any advice is much appreciated!

Thanks.

The 95 has a distributor bolted to the drivers side of head, check if the 97 has one.

If not it has cam and crank sensors mounted on the passengers side of the engine to pick up a signal from the pulleys.

If it has a distributor it will also have the crankshaft sensor.

Toyota slowly doing away with the distributor.

Listed changes for 97.

Improved head internal design for better torque, emissions, etc.

Exhaust manifold is stainless not cast and having individual tubes.

The fuel system is now non-return. The 95 has a line running to the engine and a line running back. Excess fuel not used was routed back to the tank.

Different coil system called Direct Ignition System (assume not distributor). May now have two coils instead of one.

Improved engine mount.

Would assume the injectors are different. The 97 has sequential injection.

02 sensors changed to AF sensor.

Something in the steering idle up system was changed.

EGR valve body from cast iron to aluminum.

If a non-California emission car it no longer has a converter right off the head. If a California car the converter is now build into the stainless exhaust manifold system.

The 98-99 engines seem to be the same as 97. Some time between 97 and 99 an air injection system was added (appears for California cars). Injects air into the cylinder via a modified fuel injector.

The 2000 eliminated the air injection system. Everything else appears same.

2001 the California engine are now standard for all cars.

You might look at a 97 and up engine.

Joey P,

Thanks so much. I appreciate the information. I definitely take your advice and look for something newer than the 97.

Regards.
